On 18th December 2019, the National Constitution Society's CHRIST (Deemed to be University) Chapter organized a discussion that aimed to understand citizenship in light of the recent Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (“Act”). The event saw the participation of 30 students and 2 faculty members.

The Student Conveners, Ms Amrita S Nair and Mr Shreyansh Ajmera introduced the Act and summarized its key points. Thereafter, Mr Arvind Mohan traced the historical background of the Indian Citizenship law. The students then went through handouts on the Constituent Assembly Debates on citizenship and analyzed the arguments. During the discussions, they drew parallels to the ongoing arguments relating to the Act.

Following this, the faculty members along with the Student Conveners moderated the discussions on the validity of the Act. Students aired their viewpoints with a few reflecting on the Act’s impact in Assam. The discussion went on for two hours following which most of the participants believed that the Act was inconsistent with the Constitution and its values.
