CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY
A 389-member body responsible for drafting India’s Constitution.

COMMITTEES
Committees were created by the Constituent Assembly comprising smaller groups of members delegated with various responsibilities.

CONGRESS ASSEMBLY PARTY
An unofficial forum consisting of Assembly members belonging to the Indian National Congress that met on the side-lines of the Assembly.

Remarks

Hoosenbhoy A. Lallljee, President of the All Parties Shia Political Conference, sent a telegram from Bombay on 23 January 1947 to several members of the Constituent Assembly, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Azad, Sardar Patel, Sarojini Naidu, and others.

The telegram congratulated the Assembly on passing the Objectives Resolution and then made a single demand: the election of a Shia representative to the minority committee. Lallljee reminded the recipients of what he described as a promise already made, noted that his nomination form had been filed with Mr. Gadgil and Mr. Satya Narayan Sinha, the Chief Whip, and closed by stating that three crore Shias were anxiously awaiting justice.

The document is a telegram is written in a style and format typical of a telegram. It is notable for asserting a distinct Shia political identity separate from the broader Muslim community in the context of minority representation.
