The partition of the country is the greatest tragedy that has occurred in India in recent times. It was the price that we had to pay for our freedom. The British did not leave our country because of any sudden love that they had developed for us by a change of heart; they were compelled to leave by the force of circumstances by world forces combined with the strength of the national movement and itsmarvellous leadership under Mahatma Gandhi. What followed is well known. That most unnatural division was forced upon the country.
