The line of thought as being persued by our representatives in the Constituent Assembly falls much short of any ‘ideal constitution’ for us. A large number of staunch Congressites do not agree with it. Even Mahatma Gandhi does not feel satisfied with it fully. And the reason is not far to see. This constitution as contemplated by us does not differ in its fundamentals from the old form of alien government except to the extent that the men at the helm of affairs have been replaced by Indian ones. Capitalism with all its demoralising effects and anti-social activities remains free to sap the energies of our masses. Such constitutions have more than once tried in several countries in the east and west and these have invariably resulted in war and man-slaughter on a very gigantic scale. India cannot and should not repeat the same game. Here every man and woman demands freedom from the yoke of capitalism. We should all of us get ample food, clothes, and residence along with adequate arrangements for our children’s education, and medical service in times of need. Every one should have the same equal opportunities for progress and advancement in life.
